STATION HISTORY:

98.5 has been around in form or another for many years.  It has been in Peru since it’s inception at 98.3 FM in the early 1950s.   It has been multiple formats for many years until about 10 years ago; that is when the Classic Hits format started.  The station evolved into what has become a mainstream Classic Rock station that serves Miami, Howard, Cass, Wabash, and surrounding counties from our Kokomo studio. It moved into the Kokomo studio on State Road 26 on July 8, 2004.  The radio tower is located just south of Maconaquah High School in Bunker Hill; although the station is officially licensed to Peru.  Bryan Michaels has been the morning host for the last 6 years, and the Operations Manager for the last 5 years.  He is responsible for the music and day to day sound of the station, including the morning show each weekday morning, website maintenance, live broadcasts, booking guests, executing station promotions, etc.

MARKET INFO:

You will hear our station branded as North Central Indiana’s Classic Rock station, as opposed to Peru’s or Kokomo’s Classic Rock station.  There is a reason for this.  The Classic Rock format on 98.5 truly focuses on the listeners in North Central Indiana by playing more of the music that local listeners have told us they love.  We have broadened our focus from Peru to Peru and Kokomo to North Central Indiana based on listener demand.  Miami County, Howard County, Cass County, Wabash County, and to some extent Grant and Tipton counties, are the counties we have received a strong listener response from.  The listeners have grown this station from a one-town station to a regional station.  The point is we area a top station in multiple counties.

Our competition ranges from local stations to out of market stations that can reach the area.  Based on research at county fairs and festivals and listener phone calls and talking to people at live broadcasts, 98.5’s biggest competition is Q 95 (Indianapolis Classic Rock) and X 103 (Indianapolis alternative rock).  I think it is interesting to note that our primary listeners will listen to Indianapolis radio if they aren’t listening to us.  If our listeners mention that they sometimes listen to another local station, they primarily mention Z 92.5 and WWKI.
